Goodnight Moon by Margaret Wise Brown. Goodnight Moon, written by Margaret Wise Brown and illustrated by Clement Hurd, has become one the most staple, classic children’s book of all time. It’s a title that most people have at least heard of once or twice. The soothing rhythm of words and the flat but bright illustrations combine to create a perfectly lovely bedtime book. Goodnight Moon is a simple story. There is a little bunny in his room, getting ready to go to bed. With each page he says goodnight to something new, a mouse, kittens, a pair of mittens. Some of the pages are in color, some in black and white, and each time we see the bunny’s room it is growing darker and darker until the moon and the stars are shining brightly outside. Why Is Goodnight Moon a Classic? There is a lot of discussion about whether or not this book is as good as people make it out to be, a lot of dissecting of what everything in it means or represents. How you should feel about it is not for me to say, but regardless of the hype I personally think it deserves to be loved and regarded as a wonderful classic children’s book, for no other reason than it is soothing and lovely in its simplicity. The rhyming and rhythm of the words will lull restless little ones to sleep. Slowly children can say goodnight to the busy world, and by the end, be ready to curl up and drift off away from it. What Are The Illustrations Like? They are a bit unusual, the color scheme seems slightly off, and the flat finish to all the pictures certainly adds an interesting touch, but somehow it all works. It might be a bit off- putting at first, but the more you read the more you discover how well the style fits the story. With each page, illustrator Clement Hurd depicts the scene in a dimmer and dimmer light, with the night sky, filled with stars and the moon, getting more and more prominent outside the bedroom window. This adds a great sense of time passing for the readers, and greatly emphasizes the point that it’s time to say goodnight. Should You Get It? I’d say so. It’s a wonderful bedtime read its steady progression of rhymes and things to say goodnight to. Plus, the gradual darkening of the illustrations page by page make this book a great tool to help children drift off to sleep. Here are some of my issues with the bedroom depicted in it. This bedroom is enormous.
